Boot KNOPPIX from an USB Memory Stick

Published on 2003-06-01, by Matthias Müller, ©Matthias Müller.

I used Damn Small Linux for this (it's only 51MB and has fluxbox ;-), but every other stripped down Knoppix version should do (if you have enough space on your memory stick). You can also strip down your own version of knoppix (see the Knoppix Customising FAQ).

Creating a Complete Distribution on CD

Published on 2003-11-04, by Sander van Vugt, ©Specialized Systems Consultants, Inc..

We all know about the possibilities for installing Linux on a hard drive. Sometimes, however, this option isn't good enough. Say, for example, you simply want to give someone a Linux CD that he can use without installing anything. Another scenario would be if you work for a school and want to teach your students how to use Linux on a PC, the same PC that will be used later in the day for a Windows 2000 class. In this article, the scenario is an enterprise that wants its customers to complete an evaluation at the end of a course. The goal is to insert a CD in the CD-ROM drive, boot and be redirected to some Web site where the evaluation can be completed.

GRUB boot diskette for Knoppix

Published on 2004, by anonymous, ©Anonymous.

GRUB cannot boot the Knoppix CD if booting from the CD-ROM is disabled. This is a feature that the GRUB developers should consider adding. See my previous article in the October 2004 Linux Gazette. However, GRUB (current version 0.95) can generate a floppy to boot Knoppix after a full install to hard disk - something LILO may have problems with, due to its inability to find files, and due to the kernel and initial RAMdisk growing past diskette size. Assume Knoppix is installed to hard disk but that its partition is not bootable, for whatever reason. You need a floppy to boot Knoppix, and here is how to make it with GRUB

Install KNOPPIX® LiveCD on Hard Drive

Published on 2004-11-21, by Majid Hameed, ©Specialized Systems Consultants, Inc..

KNOPPIX® is a bootable CD with a collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX® can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it. Once you are comfortable using Knoppix for your desktop, you might find yourself booting onto the CD more often. While you can create persistent settings and a portable home directory to mount, at some point you might decide you would like to use KNOPPIX® full-time by installing it to your hard drive.

Knoppix Hard Disk Installation HOWTO

Published on , by David McNab, ©David McNab.

Knoppix is a remarkable Linux 'demo' distribution, in that it can run totally from a CD, without disturbing any existing software or disks on the system it's running on. Even better, Knoppix can auto-detect hardware as it starts up, and does quite a good job of configuring this hardware. And still better, Knoppix is chock-full of the best desktop software which GNU/Linux has to offer - office software, games, productivity suites, software development tools, multimedia - you name it! After seeing a Knoppix demo, many users decide that they'd like to have Knoppix permanently installed on their system. This HOWTO gives a simple step-by-step guide to putting Knoppix on the hard disk, with the added bonus that it will run faster from then on. This guide covers a couple of obvious points which are strangely missing from the Knoppix website, and will help you to go from first boot to a fully set up GNU/Linux desktop in 20 minutes flat!

Knoppix with 2.6.7 kernel from non-bootable CD-ROM

Published on 2004, by Anonymous, ©Anonymous.

You want to start Knoppix and your CD-ROM cannot boot either for technical or administrative reasons. You can try to start the Knoppix CD from a floppy drive. For that you need a Knoppix boot diskette. The recent Knoppix 3.4 of May 2004 relies on kernel 2.4.x but has kernel 2.6.6 as an option. Likewise, Knoppix 3.7 of August 20 has the 2.6.7 kernel as an option. This last release is - for the time being - only available in Germany as a CD from a computer magazine. However, a general release, possibly with kernel 2.6.8, is coming and so it is sensible to refer to the new kernel because its size is growing and growing and causing diskette distress. We will refer to the new Knoppix kernel as knoppix26 using the same name as in the CD boot configuration. Unfortunately, knoppix26 does not boot from one diskette, it needs two.
