The package provides a flexible and scalable multi-threaded daemon, a command line scanner, and a tool for automatic updating via Internet. The programs are based on a shared library distributed with the Clam AntiVirus package, which you can use with your own software. Most importantly, the virus database is kept up to date .

exiscan is a patch against exim version 4, providing support for content scanning in email messages received by exim. It works after the sending client has completed the SMTP data phase and waits for an answer from the server. Messages containing unwanted content can be rejected at that stage, so the job of generating a bounce message is the job of the sending host.

POP3VScan is a transparent POP3-Proxy with virus-scanning capabilities. This means that all your POP3-Clients in the Network can't fetch mails from the internet without that POP3VScan have scanned it. If a virus has been found the mail is replaced with a notification and the original (infeceted) version is stored on the harddisc. Transparent means, that neither the client nor any of the used POP3-servers has to be configured.

Sophie is a daemon which uses 'libsavi' library from Sophos anti virus vendor ( www.sophos.com ). On startup, Sophie initializes SAPI (Sophos Anti-Virus Interface), loads virus patterns into memory, opens local UNIX domain socket, and waits for someone to connect and instructs it which path to scan. Since it is loaded in RAM, scanning is very fast. Of course, speed of scanning also depends on SAVI settings and size of the file.
